" learning 2 Care Training CD/ Website 2"

The aim of this measure is to support sustainable development and facilitate wider access to services and community facilities that deliver access to learning, training and employment to disadvantaged people.

Project Title : Carelink CD-ROM/ website

Summary of Project : (Describe what the project will do and who it will affect)

Within the Black Country (Walsall, Wolverhampton, Dudley and Sandwell) 6% of the workforce (25,400) people are employed within the Health and Social Care sector. Current demography predicts a considerable increase of older adults over the next 5+ years, making the Health and Social Care sector the 3rd largest expected growth sector in the Black Country.  Over 60% of employers anticipate a growth in demand for services.

The sector has substantial difficulties recruiting to the sector due to a bad image; low pay, shift work and increased regulation due to the national minimum care standards.  Last year 4,864 jobs where advertised, 92% of these where classed as hard to fill. In addition the changing demographics of the UK’s population mean an expected 70% of Health and Social Care staff will retire within the next 5- 10 years adding to the demand for staff. 

The Learning 2 Care (L2C) project aims to assist 1000 unemployed people into employment through various support and training interventions, including Information Advice and Guidance sessions (IAG) and a 4 week customised training course over 2 years. 

The CD-ROM/ website is designed to facilitate wider access to the project encouraging unemployed and people from hard to reach groups to sign up to the project.  The CD-ROM/ website will enhance L2C’s outreach work giving it a wider reach.  The CD-ROM will be accessible in various outreach venues and centres across Sandwell and the Black Country, such as Community Centres and libraries.  In addition by placing it on the internet the information is available on a wider scale and can be used as a signposting resource for people who are looking to work in care. 

The CD-ROM will be made up of the following elements:

• Quiz - a short interactive quiz to see if care is for you
• Careers – details on the various careers available in the Social Care sector, and video clips of “a day in the life” of various roles
• Training – details on the 4-week customised training course that the programme offers
• Career Path – Outlining the career paths available within the sector and the training required at each step
• Rewards – Quotes from people already working within the care sector on why they work in care
• Interview Tips – helpful hints and guidance to help you through an interview
• Media – Copies of news stories about the project and copies of our marketing
• About us – details about each of the 4 Carelink Teams
• Links – useful links to both partner organisations and other useful links

Who will benefit from this project?

The project is aimed those not in work, aged 24-59 within the Black country.   The CD-ROM/ website will provide a portal through to the L2C project which will then help suitable candidates achieve the following outputs:

• IAG (information advice and guidance)
• ITP (individual training plan)
• Skills for Life level 3
• NVQ1 equivalent course (Health and Safety)
• Technical Certificate
•  NVQ2
• 8 week job placement

And ultimately gaining employment within the Health and Social Care sector.

• Carelink will provide all written materials and photography.
• Carelink will pay for CD-ROM duplication and web site hosting.

The creation of the CD-ROM/ Website will:

• Increase the reach of the L2C programme
• Enhance community outreach
• Encourage access to IAG and where applicable Individual Training Plans (ITP), available through the L2C project.  
• Encourage people (24-59, unemployed) to take up training, available through the L2C project.
• Encourage people (24-59, unemployed) to take up employment within Health and Social Care Sector, supported through the L2C project.
• Create and signpost people to existing projects assisting people into employment
